Chi Death and Negation

L5R CCG Rules board, 22 June 2011

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

If a chi penalty is applied to a personality by an opponent's action so that his chi is now 0, can Strength of the Bamboo or Muscle and Steel be played to prevent the destruction? My understanding was that the chi penalty is not what is killing the personality, but instead the rulebook action of having 0 chi is doing so. Rulebook actions do not target the personality and should not be able to be reacted to by Strength of the Bamboo.

Chi Death Rule: if a Personality's Chi is ever zero, destroy him immediately. This destruction for having zero Chi is continuously applied.

Your understanding is incomplete. See Exception 2: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Source_of_effects

Just added a new entry to the FAQ about this: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_FAQ#Can_Strengt ... i_Death.3F
