A Walking Death

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hi,

If there is only one personality in play (controled by me), and my opponent have A Walking Death in play. He place token on my personality, but the question is if I have any legal target? My opponent was sure I have to target my personality, but there is "Personality controlled by the player on his left". He sugest that if I can't target any of his I have to target one of mine, because I need to target someone... which is silly in my opinion, but I would like to get official statement. Thanks in advance.

A Walking Death Until the game ends, after each of your Events Phases ends, each player, starting with you, gives a target Personality controlled by the player on his left a -1C Plague token.

A Walking Death does not compel you to target any Personality, who must controlled by the player on your left if possible. It orders you to target a "Personality controlled by the player on [your] left". If the player on your left controls no Personality, you cannot find any legal target and the effects fails for you.
