Do reactions for Engaging at the Battlefield count as taking place in battle?

Let's say I my opponent attacks with Kuon.

I defend with 3 Utaku Liu-Xeung:

Hida Kuon: After the first time each battle another player's action targets Kuon: If he is the only Personality in his army, the action's (remaining) effects do not happen.

Utaku Liu-Xeung: Unicorn Clan * Samurai * Cavalry * Battle Maiden * Paragon Reaction: After engaging at Liu-Xeung's battlefield: Give a target Personality or Follower opposing her a Force penalty equal to Liu-Xeung's Personal Honor.

Assuming I have Utaku Plains out (with gives my Personalities +1 PH taking Liu-Xeung to 4) which happens: A. One of the 3 Reactions is negated, and Kuon is reduced by 4 force twice. Kuon is now 4 force. B. Kuon is Reduced by 4 force all three times. Kuon is now 0 force. Kuon's trait is still active.

Thanks, in advace.

http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Battles#B._Combat_Segment: "(T)hings that are triggered 'before engaging' do not occur in or during the battle, and things that are triggered 'after engaging' do occur in and during the battle."
