Assigning (Moto Jeng-Yun + Utaku Kioko case)

L5R CCG Rules board, 11 February 2011

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

This situation is kinda strange and won't happen that often, but I would like to understand how assigning works on that case:

I have Moto Jeng-Yun and Utaku Kioko on the table. The enemy has one infantry unit and one province. In Action phase I've used Moto Jeng-Yun ability on the enemy personality:

Fear Limited: Taget another player's Personality. After the Cavalry Maneuvers Segment this turn, you may assign him, even if he is not at home, to a battlefield where you control one or more units.

In Combat Phase I'm not assigning any of my units in Infantry Maneuvers - my opponent assigns his infantry unit. In Cavalry Maneuvers I'm assigning my both personalities to attack. I now may assign enemy infantry unit due to Moto Jeng-Yun ability.

It has no sense, since his unit is already there, but my question is:

Will Utaku Kioko reaction trigger?

Reaction: After an enemy Personality assigns or moves to Kioko's battlefield: Gain 2 Honor.

In other words - if my assignment changes nothing in the overall battlefield setup, do I get the chance to gain 2 honor ?

(yes, I'm aware that if I'm after that 2 honor gain I might just assign Kioko in Infantry Maneuvers and don't care at all about Rules Team answer )

If I understand your question well, Kioko is already opposing the target of Jeng-Yun's action when its delayed triggers. Then no, Kioko's Reaction will not trigger, because you failed to assign the targeted Personality to her battlefield. Indeed, to assign is defined in the glossary as "a non-movement way to change the location of one or more units" (emphasis mine). Since the targeted Personality's location did not change, he was not assigned.
