Open Emotion Clarification

L5R CCG Rules board, 7 February 2011

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Open Emotion reads:

Open: Rehonor a target Samurai. Open: Choose your performing unbowed Samurai and show a Strategy in your hand: Once this turn, after engaging in a battle as the Defender, you may take an additional action to play a card with the shown card's title.

I understand that Open Emotion's second ability can be used to take an action before an action that is allowed by the Sneak Attack, Naval Reaction or Deathly Aura. My question though is this:

Can I play open emotion, showing Downhill Assault, an then on the defense play Downhill Assault and follow up with Downhill Assault's additional action and then take my first action provided that no sneak or sneak-like reaction has been made? In other words can I give myself three actions with this effect?

I think the answer is yes as Open Emotion states that "you may take an additional battle action to play a card with the shown card's title." This would seem to imply that I would still get my first action as well.

Thank you for your time

Yes. No rule prohibits additional actions from triggering other additional actions.
