Questions about rulings

L5R CCG Rules board, 26 January 2011

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Q#1 : My first question is about the >:< in card text. example ; the card

Iainuki Battle: Choose your performing bowed Kensai: Give a target enemy Personality -4F. If his Force is now 0, bow him and negate his movement (this turn). Straighten your Kensai's unit.

My question is whats the ruling on the effects after the : on card text.

Example #2

Relief Battle: Target one or more of your units at the current battlefield, and move all of those targets home: Target an equal number of your units at home. Move them to the current battlefield.

people say that after text before the : is all thats important the rest is just effects. so with this card if they attack with thier entire army they can use this card to send them all home, and sense they have no people left to send back into battle that the effects just dont happen, or dont have to happen. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question #2: Are personality's performing strategies if the card says target? Example

Discretionary Valor Battle: Move your target opposed Personality home: Gain 1 Honor. Draw a card.

does that personality you target perform this action? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question #3: Can Personality's perform actions while bowed? I read in the rule book that they cannot use their own printed abilitys, and does this apply to followers as well. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question #4: People i play with say shugenjas can use spells even if they are bowed, is that true? Their defense is that the spell kicks off by its self, mine is ; then whats the point of even needing the shugenja in the first place. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Question #5: Some cards create personality's, followers, or items. If the card the creates these doesn't say token after it, is it still considered a token and how long do they stay in play? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Question #6: rule book says cards actions can only be used once. Their is a player who uses the ring of void, he will bow it to draw a car, then use another card to put it in his hand then another card to bring it back into play, then he bows it to draw another card. Is this legal? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question #7: this ones about bring personality's into play from a province during your dynasty phase. the rule book states 3 ways to pay for personality's, so what people i play with are doing, is if they have a personality's whos honor requirement is higher then their family honor, they are reducing their cost by 2 cause they are clan aligned, then they are paying 2 gold more to bring them into play and gain honor. Example:

Doji Domotai - exp 4 HR - 40 GC - 13

so they reduce her cost by 2 cause shes clan aligned, so she now costs GC - 11 and they can bring her into play with no honor gain, but sense she requires 40 honor, they just add two gold on to her cost to bring her into play for her orginal gold cost of 13 and gain the honor. Is this legal? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question #8: If i use Honor's Hope on one of my personality's and it permanently gives him a battle action, if that personality dies, and i bring him back in to play later on, will he still have the battle action?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i dont see a reply button any where, so im just gonna ask my questions by editing this post.

Question #9: Personality's with the Thunder keyword, do their battle actions count as Thunder battle actions?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question #10: Reactions are Actions correct? -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question #11: Ok in the rule book, it says that after the resolution of a battle, personality's there will not move. Does that mean my personality from another battle field cannot move into that one triggering off his battle actions?

example:

|---| 3 enemy personality's |---| |__| 0 friendly personality's |__| Bayushi Keirei B1 B2 Resolved Can i use his battle action to move him, to the B1 battle even tho the battles over, and give an enemy personality a -1F token? Also if it says move him to an Adjacent battle field, does that mean a battle field that is only one away on either side? so i cant go from battle field 4 to battle field 2

Q#1: [...] people say that after text before the : is all thats important the rest is just effects. [...]

This is not true. In an ability, the effects block (the part after the last ':') may contain required targeting that must be met, regardless of whether the effects on those targets will happen or not. For more information, see Abilities and actions.

For example, here is how to play Relief. 1. You must target one or more of your units at the current battlefield. 2. You must target an equal number of your units at home. 3. All targets at the current battlefield chosen during step 1 move home. 4. All targets at home chosen during step 2 move to the current battlefield.

If you cannot choose a number of your units at home equal to the number of your targeted units at the current battlefield, then you cannot play Relief in the first place.

Question #2: Are personality's performing strategies if the card says target?

Only if they are targeted in the constraints block. See the FAQ: What performs an action?

Question #3: Can Personality's perform actions while bowed?

Yes, unless the action has a mandatory cost of bowing the performer or is printed on the bowed Personality, because abilities on bowed cards may not be used unless its text explicitly states otherwise (e.g. "Even if this card is bowed").

does this apply to followers as well

Yes.

Question #4: People i play with say shugenjas can use spells even if they are bowed, is that true?

Yes, unless the action on the Spell has a mandatory cost of bowing the Shugenja who performs it or is printed on a bowed Spell.

Question #5: Some cards create personality's, followers, or items. If the card the creates these doesn't say token after it, is it still considered a token?

No. When something is created with a type of card, that "something" is a card, not a token. We speak of a "created card". For more information, see Created cards and Tokens.

Question #5: how long do they stay in play?

Once created, a created card remains in play, unless the effect that created it explicitly states otherwise (e.g. "remove it from the game after your next turn begins").

Question #6: Their is a player who uses the ring of void, he will bow it to draw a car, then use another card to put it in his hand then another card to bring it back into play, then he bows it to draw another card. Is this legal?

Yes, per the Tracking Rule (emphasis added): "“Memory” of the status of individual cards ends when the card enters a deck or a hand, or otherwise becomes both face-down and out of play (such as after a card in the deck or hand is shown). This includes dishonorable status, ongoing effects, and whether or not an ability has been used."

Question #7: what people i play with are doing, is if they have a personality's whos honor requirement is higher then their family honor, they are reducing their cost by 2 cause they are clan aligned, then they are paying 2 gold more to bring them into play and gain honor. Is this legal?

No. The player must pay two more Gold than her base Gold cost (13+2=15) because he does not meet the Personality's Honor Requirement, otherwise he could not bring her into play. Then, he may either pay two less Gold (15-2=13), or pay the full increased cost (15) to gain Honor. For more information, see Playing Personalities and Dynasty Phase.

Question #8: If i use Honor's Hope on one of my personality's and it permanently gives him a battle action, if that personality dies, and i bring him back in to play later on, will he still have the battle action?

Yes, unless it has become both face-down and out of play after he died, per the Tracking Rule above.

in refrence to this ruling

viewtopic.php?f=59&t=88593#p1173384

while answering question 7 Loic stated that with somone who has an honor requirement above their current family honor, you can reduce the personalities cost by 2 for clan alignment then pay 2 more to gain their personal honor while they enter play. This is incorrect and needs to be fixed.

Sorry, I missed the part "and gain Honor". I will fix it. Thanks for the catch.
