Okay Ive been playing since Lotus and my playgroup always seemed that you could play all 3 cards from your focus pool and one from hand meaning the max you could focus is 4 cards. I was just flipping through my celestial rule book and I noticed that in the Duel rules it says you "may instead" swap a card from your hand.
Does that mean the most you can focus is 3 and one of those can be from you hand?
Thanks!

Strictly speaking, there is no limit to the number of cards that can be focused. It's just that you are normally limited by the number of cards in the focus pool, which is usually three.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Challenges_and_duels: "The challenger, then the challenged, each form a focus pool. They simultaneously put the top three cards of their own Fate deck face-down into a focus pool area. ... Once per duel, each player may focus a card from his or her hand instead of focus pool."
So following those instructions, you're normally done at 4 (Fixed; see below.)

I noticed the question about max number of focus cards and I believe that Zen made a little mistake in his answer. He said that you are done at 3. Well, I do believe that with the 3 from the focus pool and the optional 1 from the hand, you are normally done at 4. I could be mistaken, but I don't believe so. I am betting that Zen just made a little mistake.

Whoops. Had a bad moment with "instead of." Sorry.
