Chi Death and Udo

L5R CCG Rules board, 10 November 2010 to 11 November 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I realize that Udo's reaction in regards to effects such as Isawa Fosuta has been covered, but what about other cards that can cause Chi death (a rulebook effect) that are not ongoing effects like Fosuta and Drinking One's Life. I tried looking but didn't see these covered. What is the interaction, if any, of Udo and the following:

1) Plagued Terrain: If I play Plagued Terrain, does the initial -1C Plague token given out to everyone when it is put into play count as an action for purposes of Udo's reaction if it kills someone?

What about a personality who is moved into Plagued Terrain and is destroyed as a result of having zero Chi?

2) Mouth of the Plague: Does giving out a Plague token using Mouth of the Plague count as an action for Udo if it results in Chi death?

Chi death is a rulebook effect only in rare situations, per Source of effects: "EXCEPTION 2: A Personality’s destruction for having 0 Chi (Chi death rule) comes from the cost or effect that last gave the Personality a Chi penalty, or from the rulebook if there was no such effect."

As a consequence, Udo's Maho Reaction may be taken after the resolution of any action whose costs or immediate effects gave a Personality a lethal Chi penalty.

If I play Plagued Terrain, does the initial -1C Plague token given out to everyone when it is put into play count as an action for purposes of Udo's reaction if it kills someone?

Yes, per Source of effects: "Effects of tokens come from the effect that created them[,] not from the tokens themselves. "

What about a personality who is moved into Plagued Terrain and is destroyed as a result of having zero Chi?

No. Udo's Reaction is not triggered by destruction, but by the resolution of a specific kind of action. Here the situation is identical to Fosuta's Curse tokens: the destruction happens some time after the resolution of the action, so Udo's Reaction may not be taken.

Mouth of the Plague: Does giving out a Plague token using Mouth of the Plague count as an action for Udo if it results in Chi death?

Yes.
