Imperial Command vs. Wanyudo and resolution

L5R CCG Rules board, 30 April 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. I'm having a hard time understanding something and am really looking for some help. Let me paint this picture....

It's my turn and I'm attacking with a dude that has Wanyudo attached. The opponent plays Darkness Unleashed to destroy my Wanyudo and plays Imperial Command to remove Wanyudo from the game...but I'm told that I don't get to react with Wanyudo.

Darkness Unleashed Battle: Target your unbowed Monk: Ranged Attack with strength equal to his entering-play Honor loss. You may target an enemy Personality or Follower and give him a Force penalty equal to your Monk's Chi.

Imperial Command Reaction: After a target card is destroyed: Remove it from the game. Reaction: When an action would target your Unique Personality, pay 2 Gold: The action targets another of your Personalities instead, if legal.

Wanyudo Reaction: After the resolution of another player's Battle action that destroyed this card or its Personality: Target a card without attachments in an enemy unit at the current battlefield. Remove it from the game.

Now what I've been told is that the range damage is done and the Wanyudo is destroyed, then IC happens immediately (before the 2nd part of the battle action occurs) and then the force penalty is applied and the action is considered to have resolved. I've been told that then and only then could I have used the reaction on Wanyudo but it's too late because it was already removed by the IC.

What all of my confusion comes down to is "resolution" of an action. In every game I've ever played an actions effects happen as soon as the action resolves...but I'm basically being told that the destruction from the range attack is occurring before or during the resolution and that's why IC can react but Wanyudo cannot. I really don't understand how this can be.

Also, in every other game I've played once an action is allowed to resolve...all effects of that resolution have to complete before anything else (reactions) can be done. But this is telling me that you can react in the middle of the resolution of an action? (in my example above, reacting after the range effect but before the force penalty effect) Is this correct?

Thanks for your help...I'm just really not understanding why/how resolution can work this way.

Welcome to L5R, the game that's not every other game.
