Multiplayer + Rules of Presence and Location

L5R CCG Rules board, 22 April 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Pardon me if this is the wrong place to ask, since this is for multiplayer. I've read the rules, but they don't really make it clear and I want to check this.

If I have a card that can do something without having to be at the battlefield, but not without presence, can I perform it if the player I'm allied with has presence?

Here's what I'm talking about, as an example:

Player A is attacking player B at two different provinces, and invites Player C (me) to assist in attack. I assign units to ONE of the provinces as an attacker, thus becoming ally of Player A. I have a Groves of Stone attached on a shugenja at home, and Player A resolves the battlefield where I have no units, but player A does. Can I use groves of stone at that province? Basically, I'm asking if my ally having units there also gives me presence if I don't? The rules on what benefits allies get aren't very clear cut.

Groves of Stone: Battle: Even if this unit is not at the current battlefield, bow this Shugenja unless they are Earth: Give the current Battlefields Province +4 or -4 strength.

I know in single player, you cannot do it because you don't have presence. Even though the card says if THIS unit isn't there, which negates the rule of location, you still need presence. As opposed to castle of water which can be done without location or presence.

Thank you in advance!

Sorry, no; you may not. The rule of Presence still applies to each player individually. Your ally can't fulfill it for you.
