The Direct Approach and Duration

L5R CCG Rules board, 6 April 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

A buddy of mine brought this up and I thought I should get clarifaction. I tried to see if this had been answered already but could find nothing in the forum search.

The Direct Approach reads:

Give a target Personality -1F for each of his keywords other than Clan alignments. If his Force is now 0, he may not perform actions.

My friend has Bayushi Jutsushi on the table.

Jutsushi is 2F/4C that says:

Scorpion Clan • Courtier • Magistrate Political Open: Target a Personality with Personal Honor lower than Jutsushi's Chi. After the next time the Personality's unit assigns this turn, dishonor him, and his controller loses 2 Honor.

I played TDA on Jutsushi reducing his force to 0 and stopping his ability to take actions. My friend stated that now Jutsushi may take no actions for the rest of the game because the penalty doesn't say "til end of turn". I disagree with this. It was my understanding that card effects without any stated duration, such as Force bonuses and penalties, last until the end of the turn. Am I correct?

Thank you for your answer in advance.

Yes, you are correct.

http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Ongoing_effects: "Ongoing effects last until the end of the turn in which they were applied unless otherwise indicated."

Thank you for your answer in advance.

Happy to help.
