once per game effects and card memory

L5R CCG Rules board, 23 March 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I'm assuming that the "once per game" clause on a card will override the rule of card memory when a card goes to an area that is "out of play." The "once per game" effect has already occured, so even if a card went back to the dynasty deck and was revealed later, it's "once per game" effect could not be used again.

I.E. Isawa Takaki Reaction: After Takashi enters play, once per game: Create two 2F/2C/2PH Phoenix Clan • Samurai • Yojimbo Personalities at Takashi's location.

I Play Takaki, use once per game react Kill Takaki, react with Spin the Karmic Wheel, returning Takaki to the dynasty deck Takaki is revealed again

Am I correct that I could not use the once per game ability on Takaki again? I know it seems pretty straight forward, but, for some reason I'm second guessing myself. There is this nagging voice in my head wondering what if the other Takaki's hadn't come into play yet, how do we know that was the one I used? Are there different rules for unique cards?

No, it doesn't.

No such exception is given under the Tracking Rule: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Tracking_rule. It says, "This includes ... whether or not an ability has been used." It's not, "whether an ability other than a once per game ability has been used."
