Timing and Legality of Udo's Reaction

L5R CCG Rules board, 14 March 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

With the pile of legal cards which initiate delayed destruction of personalities now legal, I'd like to clarify how the rules for "delayed" effects and reactions interact. Specifically, Udo's reaction vs. the following cards:

Udo Maho Reaction: After the resolution of an action that destroyed a Follower or Personality: Create a 2F/2C/0PH Shadowlands • Undead Personality at Udo's location.

The Dead Do Not Rest Battle: Bow your target Shugenja at any location: Move one to three target Undead Personalities in your home to the current battlefield, even if any of them have been in an attacking army at a battlefield during its battle's resolution. Straighten their units if they moved. Destroy them after this battle's resolution.

Seiden Sanzo Limited: Target a Personality you own and control. Give him Cavalry and +3F. Destroy him after your next Dynasty Phase begins.

Mountains of the Phoenix Battle: Before this battle’s resolution, the Attacker and the Defender each choose a unit in their own army; the active player decides who chooses first. Then, destroy the chosen units.

The rules for when an delayed effect action resolves: A delayed effect is activated at one time (when it is determined that the effect is going to occur), but is actually applied at another (when the effect actually changes the game state). Example: in “Battle: After your next Attack Phase this game begins, target a unit and bow it” the Battle action resolves fully during that battle, but the targeting and bowing occurs in the player’s next Attack Phase.

My question is: Does Udo react to each of these cards A) when the personality actually leaves play B) when the action is played, but before the personality leaves play C) never

Thanks!

The answer is c. The action has already resolved before any destruction effects occur. Udo cannot react to delayed effects that cause destruction.
