Base stat value, traits, and asterisks

L5R CCG Rules board, 13 March 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

When a trait sets the value of a personalities stat, you still use the printed number in the stat box, Correct? i.e. Mirumoto Meisetsu has a base force of 0 no matter how many unique cards you have in play, right?

What about the case of personalites that don't have a number in the the stat box? i.e. Naga Abomination. Since there is a * printed in the stat box for chi, would the base value be considered 0?

I'm just wondering if this is a templating change that occured somewhere along the line, and, how old cards with interact with new cards in legacy format.

Thank you.

http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_B#Base: "A stat’s base value will not change."

http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Card_features#Asterisks: "An asterisk (*) appearing instead of a stat on a card means that the stat is variable, with a base value of zero and actual value determined according to other circumstances." (Emphasis added.)
