Chi Death and Strength of the Bamboo

L5R CCG Rules board, 1 February 2010 to 11 December 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I really don't mean to beat a dead horse here, but I'm genuinely confused about something, concerning the ruling here.

Am I wrong in thinking that personality destruction caused from having 0 Chi is a rulebook effect? That question in mind, why does Strength of the Bamboo negate the destruction of a personality targeted by Fosuta's action when the destruction is caused by a rulebook effect and not by the action itself?

Strength of the Bamboo Heroic Reaction: After an action targets your Hero Perosnality: Negate his destruction from the action's effects. Give him +1F.

Furthermore, using the previous ruling, if a person plays a Strength of the Bamboo in reaction to Fosuta's action bringing a target to 0 chi, does that mean the personality gets to stay alive for that whole turn with a chi value of 0 (considering SotB stops the destruction but not the token?) And if so, why does this trump the rulebook effect of destruction for having 0 chi? (Edit: Specifically, in regards to this last question, this rule on instantaneous effects and chi death.)

Half wrong.

http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Source_of_effects: "A Personality’s destruction for having 0 Chi (Chi death rule) comes from the cost or effect that last gave the Personality a Chi penalty, or from the rulebook if there was no such effect." (Emphasis added.)

You have to look at the source of the effect on a case by case basis.

In regards to this: http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=81550&p=1066191&hilit=+Strength+the+Bamboo#p1066191

Can some context be provided for this rule? As I understand it, personalities do not exist that start with a chi of 0, and nothing I can think of will alter a personality's chi without being part of either somethings cost or effect. Under what circumstances would the emphasized part of the above ruling, then, ever occur?
