L5R CCG Rules board, 27 January 2010 to 1 February 2010
A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

If I play, for example, Changing Paths and name Void, then play 3 strategies followed by Insight, when do I look for Ring of the Void via Changing Paths?
1. Before I look at the top 3 cards? (seems unlikely) 2. After I look at the top 3 cards but before I play one for an action thus looking for Ring of Void, shuffling, and placing the two/three remaining cards I just looked at on top of the deck? 3. After I look at the top 3 cards, before I play one for an action, but after I place the remaining cards on top of the deck? 4. After I resolve the action I get from Insight? What if the action I resolve from insight is another Insight? Or another card that grants an additional action?
Thanks.

At the end of Insight's resolution so #3 is correct (see below).
Here is what happens, step by step. A) Insight's resolution begins. B) You look at the top 3 cards of any Fate deck. C) You may rearrange them. D) A delayed effect is created to allow you to take an additional Battle action to play one of them that is a Battle Strategy, later (at step J below). E) Insight's resolution ends. F) You have just resolved your fourth or later non-Kiho action from Strategies in one phase, thus you trigger Ring of the Void's base trait that would put it into play from your hand, so the effect from Changing Paths compels you to search to your discard pile, then Fate deck, for that Ring, show it and put it into your hand. G) If you searched your Fate deck, you must shuffle it. Set aside the chosen Battle Strategy card during the shuffling. H) If the Ring of the Void is in your hand, you may put in into play by its own text. I) Reactions triggered after Insight resolved may be taken. J) You may take an additional Battle action to play the chosen Battle Strategy card.

I assume the answer is no, but after shuffling are you allowed to see if that card is still in the place you put it during the resolution of Insight?
example: I play insight, and put the card I want to play at the top of the deck. Search for void, shuffle the deck. Can I check the top card to see if its still the card I wanted to play?

The rules team seem to be placing emphasis on knowing the location of the card you wish to play for the additional battle action. To the point of even implying that it needs to be the top card. Insight allows you to rearrange the 3 cards you look at in any order and then if you wish play one of them (for a Battle action), there does not seem to be a requirement that the one you play be on top of the deck. The action (Insight) even seems to imply you could select the card as the 3rd card from the top and then still play it for a Battle action. The cards you look at never actually leave the out of play location of the deck.
Why then does it matter if the deck is shuffled between rearranging the cards and the additional battle action? What does it matter if the selected card is 3 deep into the deck or 20? You should still have the option to play it.

EDIT: reworded this post as it was a bit confusing about the use of Insight.

I have forgotten a relevant exception to the Tracking Rule that explains what should happen above. Sorry for the mistake.
Here is the relevant exception to the Tracking Rule (emphasis added): "EXCEPTION 1: A card's role in a series of costs and effects from a single action or trait is not "forgotten" from one effect to the other -- for example, if you are asked to draw a card and then show it, you must show the same card. If a card being tracked in this way is in a deck that is then shuffled, the tracked card is set aside during the shuffling; if it then needs to return to the deck, it is shuffled in again"
As a consequence, you will be able to play the chosen Battle Strategy card even if you shuffle your Fate deck because it is set aside while you shuffle it.
after shuffling are you allowed to see if that card is still in the place you put it during the resolution of Insight?
No. Firstly because you set it aside. Secondly because you cannot look at a card in your deck unless an effect allows you to do so.
The action (Insight) even seems to imply you could select the card as the 3rd card from the top and then still play it for a Battle action.
