Sneak Attack plus Obfuscation vs Reinforce the Gates

L5R CCG Rules board, 20 January 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hi there,

I understand that if I were to use the equip action from the rulebook as a Naval action or after a Sneak Attack (for example via Dragon Guard City) and the opponent would react with a Reinforce the Gates, I can opt not to pay the attachment's goldcost and the attachment would stay in my hand (or discard pile if it started out there). So far I understand things.

But now I am using a Sneak Attack and follow up with an Obfuscation. The opponent reacts with Reinforce the Gates. Can I now opt not to pay the costs of the attachment? What happens to the attachment if I do this? I am pretty sure it isn't the same as what happens with the Equip action...

Thank you!

Not to pay the attachment cost is neither an option nor a choice: the effect of attaching it does not happen so its cost must not be paid.

I am using a Sneak Attack and follow up with an Obfuscation. The opponent reacts with Reinforce the Gates.

Then you target an attachment from your hand or discard pile, then you target one of your Personalities, then you pay Obfuscation's mandatory costs (none), then its effects do not happen because of Reinforce the Gates. Especially the effect of attaching the targeted attachment does not happen. Thus you do not have to choose whether you pay the attachment's costs: you must not pay them.

What happens to the attachment if I do this?

Nothing, it remains where it is; if it is in your hand, you don't even show it.
