Rejuvenating Vapors and Location

L5R CCG Rules board, 6 January 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

My question regards Rejuvenating Vapors: Water Battle: Even if this unit is not at the current battlefield, bow this Shugenja: Target your Personality. Give him +3F if he is unbowed. Straighten him.

Is it possible to have my shugenja at home use vapors to target a card not at the current location (say at home) in order to straighten them, assuming I do have presence at the current battlefield? Similar to Asako Bairei.

No it is not legal. The Water Battle action from Rejuvenating Vapors targets one of your Personalities, who is always a card in a unit, and its effects do not move him so the exception to the Rule of Location does not apply. As a consequence, the first part of the Rule of Location compels you to target him at the current battlefield (see below).

The phrase "Even if this unit is not at the current battlefield" only waives the second part of this rule: the performing Shugenja's unit may be at any location.

Battles, Rule of Location: 1. A card in a unit must be at the current battlefield to be targeted by a Battle action.
