Shrine of Champions & Asako Kanta question

L5R CCG Rules board, 25 November 2009 to 26 November 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

It was ruled that Asako Kanta can not straighten the shrine of champions because his ability does not state "stronghold" on it. By that logic, since the shrine of champions ability does not state "stronghold" either it can not bow itself to send someone home.

1) Why does the comprehensive rules on the shrine of champions say it does work on itself since it does not say stronghold in it's comprehensive ability text?

Shrine of Champions

* Reads, "Shrine of Champions 6PS 4G 6FH Temple. Battle: Even if this card is bowed and even if you control no units at the current battlefield, bow one of your Temples: Move a target attacking Personality home." Celestial Edition, 29 June 2009] * Shrine of Champions can be bowed to pay the cost of its own action.

2) Does this change the ruling on Asako Kanta not being able to straighten the shrine of champions? If not may we get an entry for Asako Kanta on the comprehensive rules stating so?

Thanks in advance.

Yes.

That is why there's a ruling in the archive. To clarify, and, in this particular case, correct.

Both rulings are current and correct.

Regarding this

Zen doesn't explain why Shrine of Champions can pay the cost of its own action, so please let me try, so that the OP doesn't come out with the feeling the ruling is arbitrary.

The CR rules clearly state: Stronghold Immunity: effects, costs, and targeting applied to "cards," or referring to a particular keyword that a Stronghold has, do not legally apply to a Stronghold unless they specifically mention the word "Stronghold," or come from the Stronghold itself. Strongholds count as cards in all other ways. (emphasis mine)

Strongholds can always pay costs for (or be targeted by) their own actions. Asako Kanta doesn't have this prerogative.

Hope it helped.

Thanks for the addition.
