Battle resolution rehonoring vs. Deeds and Words

L5R CCG Rules board, 9 November 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

To help clear up an argument me and my local scorpion are having. Can you play Deeds and Words to negate the rehonoring of dishonorable personalities in battle resolution?

Deeds and Words

Reaction: Before a player gains or loses Honor during the Action Phase, destroy this card: Reduce the gain or loss to 0.

Honorable and dishonorable (from the comprehensive rulebook)

Before a player with one or more dishonorable Personalities in his or her army gains Honor from allying with that army (see Invite Allies) or from destroying enemy cards in battle resolution, all such dishonorable Personalities are rehonored and the Honor is not gained. In a tied battle, all dishonorable Personalities in an army are rehonored before being destroyed, and their army’s leader gains no Honor.

Because the rules state the Honor is not gained it is my belief that Deeds and Words cannot trigger as there is no honor gain to negate.

Can you play Deeds and Words to negate the rehonoring of dishonorable personalities in battle resolution?

No, for two reasons.

First, the Attack Phase is not the Action Phase.

Second, the rules will stop the honor gain from happening before a Reaction can (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Timing#Timing_sequence).
