Hand of the Jade Dragon, Doomed Undertaking

L5R CCG Rules board, 18 October 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Can you use Hand of the Jade Dragon's reaction to negate the attached personalities death if doomed undertaking gives the personality a zero chi or lower?

Hand of the Jade Dragon:

After an action resolves: Negate this personalities destruction from the actions effects.

Doomed Undertaking:

Terrain Battle: Non shadowlands personalities have -2f/-1c

I dont remember where I found this at, but it was ruled that:

A chi penalty death results from the last action that gave a chi penalty, or from the rulebook if no such action took place.

Can you use Hand of the Jade Dragon's reaction to negate the attached personalities death if doomed undertaking gives the personality a zero chi or lower?

No.

Hand of the Jade Dragon has an instantaneous effect (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Instantaneous_effects).

Doomed Undertaking has an ongoing effect (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Ongoing_effects).

http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Negatin ... ccurrences: "Special rules apply to the prevention of Personality destruction from zero Chi (.) Ongoing and instantaneous effects that prevent destruction" -- like Hand of the Jade Dragon -- "will not prevent destruction from such an effect."
