Lost Traveler Castle & Sunrise Keep

L5R CCG Rules board, 14 October 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Lost Traveler Castle states: After the first time each turn you choose a Personality to bring into play during your Dynasty Phase: You may pay 2 less Gold for him and, after he enters play, gain Honor equal to his Personal Honor.

and Sunrise Keep states: After the first time each turn you choose a Personality to bring into play during your Dynasty Phase: You may pay 2 less Gold for him and ignore his Honor Requirement.

My question is fairly simple, the condition in the trait on each of these says "after the first time each turn you choose a personality..." (yadda): something happens. Does the something that happens, happen for the first time I bring a personality into play, or the second and subsequent instances of when I choose a personality to bring into play.

Certainly it seems like the latter would not make much sense, although I think I am constrained (by the Good Faith rule??) from making the following sequence of play (off either stronghold): 1. choose Kuronada in province 1 2. choose NOT to pay sufficient gold and he returns to his province as the purchase fails (IIRC) 3. choose Oishi in province 2 4. apply the effect of the trait from the stronghold (i.e. pay 2 less gold and either ignore the HR or gain Honor equal to his PH).

Thanks, ODie...

My question is fairly simple, the condition in the trait on each of these says "after the first time each turn you choose a personality..." (yadda): something happens. It only applies to the first instance, just as it says.

Good Faith only applies to actions, not bringing cards into play in Dynasty.

My question is, why would you ever even attempt steps 1 and 2 of your sequence? I mean, it could be argued that if you know you're not going to be paying the cost, you're not even technically "choos[ing]... to bring [it] into play".

But, so we're clear (and this may be the point of your confusion), you may choose any card in your Provinces to bring into play in any order during Dynasty. You're not restricted to making a decision about each card in a left-to-right sequence.
