Yoritomo Eihiko & Moshi Takako

L5R CCG Rules board, 21 September 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Yorotimo Eihiko Mantis Clan • Magistrate • Extortionist Reaction: After you announce an action: Reduce the Gold Cost of a target card (in play) by 2 until the action ends.

Moshi Takako Mantis Clan • Thunder • Shugenja • Naval • Unique Battle: Bow Takeko, choose a number from 1 to 10, and pay that much Gold: Ranged Attack with strength equal to the number chosen.

Here is the situation:

I have Yorotimo Eihiko x2 in play. I have Moshi Takako in play.

Both of my Eihiko's have targeted and reduced the gold cost of a 4 gold personality who is currently opposing Takako. So, in essence, the 4 gold personality now has a (temporary) 0 gold cost. Is it possible that Takako can Ranged Attack with strength equal to '0' [gold] (3 would be prudent to account for outer walls) and kill the opposing personality? Or does Takako have to use at least 1 gold (4 would be prudent to account for outer walls) to kill the personality?

In other words, if a personality has a zero-rating for the opposed 'test' (probably wrong terminology, sorry if it is) does the test still have to have a greater than zero value to succeed?

I hope I haven't confused you, and I look forward to your reply(ies).

EDIT: OK. I apparently didn't read the card well enough. Takako makes a ranged attack at the strength equal to the amount of gold that she paid. Understood. I also notice (now) that she must pay at least 1 gold to make the ranged attack. Thanks!

You cannot pick "Zero" for Moshi Takako's ability, because "zero" is not "a number from 1 to 10" (card text).

I believe a more prudent answer might be that Takako doesn't even make a ranged attack vs Gold cost, so the whole question is moot in point, no?

That is correct. Of course, I may not be understanding the original question correctly.
