Seiden Sanzo and Hand of the Jade Dragon

L5R CCG Rules board, 14 September 2009 to 23 October 2009

Hello,

Although I have seen the relevant rules question on Channeling Jigoku's Essence, I am not quite sure that I have a clear view on what's happening in the following situation:

I target a personality I control with the Hand of the Jade dragon attached with Seiden Sanzo. I attack, the battle ends, and the personality's unit goes back bowed. So there are two questions:

a) Can I react with the Hand of the Jade Dragon, on the Sanzo's targeting? b) or do I need to have the Hand unbowed in order to react to Sanzo's destruction at the end of the battle (when the destruction does occur)?.

I understand Strength of the Bamboo has a different wording since it generally protects the hero from the destruction of an action regardless when the resolution kicks in.

Thanks in advance.

Cards involved: Hand of the Jade Dragon: Jade • Unique Attaches to Matsu Benika paying 2 less Gold. This Personality has Hero. Reaction: Before an action's resolution: Negate this Personality's destruction from the action's effects.

Seiden Sanzo Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold, or 3 Gold if paying for a Hero. Limited: Target a Personality you own and control. Give him Cavalry and +3F. Destroy him after your next Dynasty Phase begins.

a'') The Reaction on Hand of the Jade Dragon must be taken "before an action's resolution" (card text), which happens after the action's mandatory costs are paid (if any).

I understand Strength of the Bamboo has a different wording since it generally protects the hero from the destruction of an action regardless when the resolution kicks in.

I don't understand what you mean, because an action's resolution always happens at the same time: after mandatory costs are paid, if any (see Using abilities).

Hand of the Jade Dragon can prevent the Hero's destruction from any action (e.g. Mountains of the Phoenix). Strength of the Bamboo can prevent the Hero's destruction from an action that targets him only, so it is powerless against this Terrain.

Referred sentence = I don't understand what you mean, because an action's resolution always happens at the same time: after mandatory costs are paid, if any (see Using abilities). Hand of the Jade Dragon can prevent the Hero's destruction from any action (e.g. Mountains of the Phoenix). Strength of the Bamboo can prevent the Hero's destruction from an action that targets him only, so it is powerless against this Terrain.

Referring to that ruling, I noticed that it is referred that Hand of the Jade Dragon can prevent the Hero's destruction from Mountains of Phoenix. But that would mean that I have to activate the reaction of the hand of jade dragon when Mountains of the Phoenix is being played isn't it?

Yes. As explained in the first part of my previous answer, the Reaction on Hand of the Jade Dragon must be taken "before an action's resolution" (card text), which happens after the action's mandatory costs are paid (if any). In this situation, this Reaction must be taken immediately after Mountains of the Phoenix enters play at the current battlefield (see Glossary, Terrain).
