Shame Never Dies & seppuku

L5R CCG Rules board, 29 July 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Probably a stupid question but...

Shame Never Dies Political Reaction: After the resolution of an action that moved home or destroyed a dishonorable Personality at a battlefield, target your Courtier, and bow him unless he is Scorpion Clan: The Personality's owner loses 3 Honor.

There is this dishonorable samurai at the current battlefield, and he's targeted with a Battle action that causes a honor loss (eg Inexplicable Challenge). His controller decides to commit seppuku. Is the seppuku Reaction a legal trigger for Shame Never Dies? He was dishonored and at a battlefield when the action was announced, and the action destroyed him... What is checked, whether he was dishonored when the action's required targets were made, or if he was dishonored after the action's effects resolved?

Is the seppuku Reaction a legal trigger for Shame Never Dies?

No. To commit seppuku means to rehonor the Personality, then to destroy him, and these effects will not be negated (see Glossary, Seppuku). As a consequence, although this Reaction destroyed the Personality while he was at a battlefield, first it rehonored him, then he died honorably.

Shame Never Dies checks whether the Personality was dishonorable when he moved home or was destroyed, not when the action that did so was announced nor when it targeted him.
