Dynasty Honor Gains and Reduction of Honor Gain

L5R CCG Rules board, 19 July 2009 to 24 July 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

When I bring a personality into play during the Dynasty phase and the honor gain for paying full gold is reduced to 0, can I still buy another personality for full gold and gain honor from bringing it into play? How about when the honor gain is negated not just reduced?

You only get to try once.

Celestial Edition rules, pg. 28: "(Y)ou may choose to gain Honor equal to your aligned Personality’s Personal Honor just before you bring him into play, once per Dynasty Phase."

So you only get to decide once, not gain honor once. Plus, most reductions and negations occur after that.

There's been some discussion in the Rules Junta on this. The Celestial Edition rulebook is not worded as exactly the same as the Celestial Edition comprehensive rules will be (and no peeking now, they're not ready yet). The rule for Celestial Edition will be unchanged from Samurai Edition, listed here: http://rules.l5r.com/Sequence_of_play#Dynasty_Phase

In particular, "A player may only gain Honor this way once per turn." So whether honor is actually gained is the key point, not the decision.

Apologies for the confusion.
