Michio, XP

L5R CCG Rules board, 6 July 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Michio, xp

Reaction: After the resolution of an action performed by a Personality who is now at Michio's location: Bow or straighten him.

Does the word "him" refer to Michio himself or the personality who's "now at Michio's location"?

The "Special wording rules" at this link http://rules.l5r.com/Special_wording_rules have the following to say:

"Pronouns and pronoun-like terms, like "him," "it," "them," or "that Personality," refer to the last possible thing mentioned in the text that the term would logically refer to."

It seems logical to me to refer to Michio XP himself, but illogical to change the functionality of the card from it's previous incarnation in such a drastic fashion (and I don't think he could straighten himself if he was bowed, anyway), hence the question.

thanks, Andrew

It refers to the Personality who performed the action.

Michio, xp: Does the word "him" refer to Michio himself or the personality who's "now at Michio's location"?

The latter. There is no other "him" that it could possibly refer to; the only noun in the previous part of the card is "Personality."
