Shameful Injury vs Token based Bonuses

L5R CCG Rules board, 1 July 2009 to 5 February 2010

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hi could I get a clarification on the following:

First the cards: Shameful Injury Battle: Even if you control no units at the current battlefield: Negate all current Force bonuses and penalties a target Personality has received from actions. Until the turn ends, negate all new Force bonuses or penalties on him from actions.

Dance of Flames Limited: Bow your target Shugenja or Monk: Give him a number of +1F Fire Tokens equal to his Chi, plus one if he has the Fire keyword.

I found the following posts: Shameful Injury vs Wedge - Any stat increase is considered a bonus Shameful Injury vs Ritual of Summoning - Even a permanent change is negated and will not reassert itself when the negating effect of Shameful Injury ends.

My questions are:

A> Does Shameful Injury negate the +Force tokens from Dance of Flames? B> Does Shameful Injury remove the +Force tokens as part of its negating effect? C> If Shameful Injury does not remove the +Force tokens does the Personality regain the bonus from the +Force tokens after the negating effect of Shameful Injury ends?

Thanks for your time.

A> Does Shameful Injury negate the +Force tokens from Dance of Flames?

The tokens themselves cannot be negated but the Force bonus they provide is negated by Shameful Injury's first effect, then it reasserts itself immediately because it is continuous and this negation is instantaneous. It is not negated by Shameful Injury's second effect because it is not a new bonus.

See Effects, Duration and scope of negation effects.

B> Does Shameful Injury remove the +Force tokens as part of its negating effect?

No. Only effects (or costs) can be negated and tokens themselves are not effects although they are created by effects.

C> If Shameful Injury does not remove the +Force tokens does the Personality regain the bonus from the +Force tokens after the negating effect of Shameful Injury ends?

Yes, as explained above.

Correction: due to a major change in the Comprehensive Rules, both negation effects from Shameful Injury are ongoing and last until the turn ends, so the answers above have become incorrect: the Force bonuses from both current and new tokens are negated until the turn ends, then they reassert themselves.
