Misdirection vs. Daigotsu Meguro Experienced

L5R CCG Rules board, 6 May 2009 to 8 May 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

My opponent is in battle with a copy of Daigotsu Meguro Exp., I have one personality without a follower opposing him and he attempts to use his ability. Before he targets my guy, I play Misdirection. I am forced to target my only personality with the first targeting effect giving my personality -3 Force. However, the second effect of the action reads 'you may make a Ranged 3 Attack targeting a legal card in personalities unit'. Does the 'you may' on the card text mean that this is an optional targeting effect and one that I can choose to not find a target for, or does it mean something else all together?

Battle: Bow Meguro: Give a target enemy Personality a -3F token. You may make a Ranged 3 Attack targeting a legal card in the Personality's unit. Move Meguro home.

In the second effect, the Ranged 3 Attack is optional and the choice belongs to Meguro's controller. If he chooses to make it, Misdirection allows you to choose the "legal card in the Personality's unit" that the Ranged 3 Attack targets. Unfortunately in your example, there is only one legal target: your Personality with no Followers, so you must choose it. You are not allowed not to find a legal target for this effect if there is one available.

In response to viewtopic.php?f=59&t=75639 wouldn't the ranged attack targeting Meguro be an illegal target for the ranged attack targeting himself and thus either fail or not able to be taken?

That is not what was said.

Misdirection will not allow its player to choose not to trigger the optional effect of Daigotsu Meguro Experienced's action if there is a legal target for it.
