Effects that can't occur (Game of Sincerity)

L5R CCG Rules board, 25 March 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Ok, I'm almost certain I have the right answer here, however we had a small argument the other night about this, so I thought I'd get confirmation (plus, MacBeth isn't in Crane Chat right now >.>)

I'll take Game of Sincerity as an example:

Battle: Dishonor your target unbowed Personality: Dishonor a target Personality. His controller loses 2 Honor. Neither Personality contributes Force in this battle's resolution.

Can it target an already dishonored personality for it's effect? As the dishonoring is not a cost, I'd have said so. This ties in with the question of, can I Misdirection, and have the personality he dishonors as a cost target HIMSELF with the effect?

My opinion is there's nothing wrong with targetting dishonored personalities with this, and therefore you could also target the performing personality with the effects of the action?

Thanks in advance.

Game of Sincerity: Can it target an already dishonored personality for its effect?

Yes. This is a variation of "Is an action legal if an effect can't happen?"

(C)an I Misdirection, and have the personality he dishonors as a cost target HIMSELF with the effect?

Yes.
