Eastern Hub Port + Additional battle action Vs Reactions

L5R CCG Rules board, 25 March 2009 to 4 November 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hello, this is my first question here, so I hope I do it right. Besides, I'm spanish, so it's possible my english don't be correct. I apoligize for that. Here is the question:

If I use the ability to equip as battle that grants me the Eastern Hub Port stronghold, I know that I can't react with Pincers and Tail to attach it and then, take the additional battle action to make the ranged attack that provides P&T but, why? It's said that is a matter of timing, and that can't be taken reactions before delayed effects or indefinite conditional effects resolve, but then, can my opponent react with Reinforce the Gates to the announce of that indefinite conditional effect (the additional battle action)? And with Seat of Power to the targets? Can I react after equiping the first time with Taoist Archer and draw a card, although the additional battle action hasn't been resolved?

Thanks in advance.

EHP Equipping is a Battle/Open action for you. After the first Battle action resolves each turn that attached a card to one of your Personalities: You may take an additional Battle action.

Pincers and Tail Reaction: After a Battle action targeting one of your Personalities resolves, if this card is in your hand: Attach it to him, paying 2 less Gold. Battle: Bow and destroy this card: Ranged 3 Attack. You may compare this attack's strength against the target's Chi instead of Force if he is a Personality.

Reinforce the Gates Reaction: After a player announces a Battle action before the Defender’s first normal opportunity to act or pass: Negate the action’s effects.

Taoist Archer Reaction: After this card enters play: Draw a card.

If you are referring to a previous post, please link to it. I am not sure why you think that is not possible. Are you talking about using the Equip action to attach Pincers and Tail itself? That should be fine. Or are you talking about using the Equip action to attach some other item, then attach Pincers and Tail?

If the latter, the additional action is a delayed effect of the stronghold, and so the extra action will always come before a Reaction (e.g., attaching Pincers and Tail), as listed here: http://rules.l5r.com/Timing#Resolving_timing_conflicts. (Previously described here: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=63202)

I don't understand the following questions.

Regarding this:

The ruling specifically forbids reacting with Pincers and Tail before the additional action granted by the stronghold (when using the Equip action to attach something else) is taken.

"If the latter, the additional action is a delayed effect of the stronghold, and so the extra action will always come before a Reaction (e.g., attaching Pincers and Tail), [...]" (then comes a link to the CR and to a ruling dated in 2007)

While this timing sequence could be true for most effects, additional actions have (and had) a special timing. CE CR link "When an action or triggered trait grants an additional action, the timing of the additional action is delayed, such that the action is taken once the action or trait that granted it has ended, and the opportunity to play Reactions to the end of the action or trait has passed. This makes sure that Battle actions can not occur within other Battle actions, and so on. "

(Empasis mine) (Note: for context, let me also include the SE CR link to the same text, its latest modification is dated at June 2008. This date is relevant because the linked ruling is previous to that date)

Therefore, players should be able to react with Pincers and Tail before the additional action happens (as it's delayed until the opportunity to react to the Equip action ends), and use the additional action, for example, to use the battle action in Pincers and Tail, which would be already in play.

Thank you in advance.

Thanks for the correction.
