Deadly Orders

L5R CCG Rules board, 22 March 2009 to 23 March 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I use Deadly Orders on my Brother In Arms basic and he become a 6F follower that is destroyed after resolution right? But what if at another battlefield I manage to put him again in my hand and then into game again by using his other copies, does he still get the force bonus? What if the follower I gave the bonus is the Brothers In Arms experienced?

Firstly, the force of your Brothers in Arms (basic) after using deadly orders on it will be (2 base + (2base x 2) equals) 6.

Once a card goes from play or the discard pile to your hand, all effects on it are gone. When you put that same Brothers in Arms in play the follwer's force will be 2 again.

For Brothers in Arms Experienced, the force after Deadly Orders will be (3 base + (3basex 2) equals) 9, and his force when you return Brothers in Arms Experienced to your hand via the ability on Brothers in Arms (basic), and then put him into play will be 3 again.

EDIT: Edited for Card accuracy.

"the force of your Brothers in Arms (basic) after using deadly orders on it will be (2 base x 2 equals) 4." Isn't it a bonus of 4 (twice its current Force), for a total of 6 force?

Deadly Orders Battle: Target your Commander: Give your target Follower a Force bonus equal to twice its current Force. After this battle's resolution, destroy the Follower.

Right. Fixing!

From the Comprehensive Rules on Effects:

"Ongoing effects that affect a card in play persist when the card leaves play, unless something else intervenes (for example, the Tracking rule - see above)."

Cards enter discard piles face up, so wouldn't a follower targetted by Deadly Orders then destroyed retain the force increase until the end of the turn (the normal duration for an effect wearing off unless stated otherwise)?

Yes, that's true.

But the original question was about a Brothers in Arms retrieved via another's Reaction. That would place it in the hand from the discard pile. At that point, it's face-down and out-of-play, so then the Tracking Rule kicks in and the card "forgets" its bonuses.
