I Carry Two Blades vs Hand of Osano-Wo

L5R CCG Rules board, 12 March 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hmm - sounds like a mash-up.

Anyway, had a situation come up in a friendly game last night that had two TOs giving me different answers, and I was hoping the Rules Team could give me some clarity on.

I was attacking a proving with Mirumoto Satobe, who had a Blade of Pure Soul attached (7F unit, able to boost itself to 9F). Facing him was Togashi Miyoko XP and Togashi Dai. As I didn't have a Sneak in hand, my opponent got the first action, using Hand of Osano-Wo to break the Blade of Pure Soul.

I attempted to react to the destruction of the weapon with two copies of I Carry Two Blades to pull a Tsi Blade and Oni-Daikyu out of the bin. Despite this appearing to be the trigger for the reaction, I was told by my opponent that I couldn't do this, as the action hadn't finished resolving. He then promptly reacted to targeting my now naked Satobe with the Ranged 3 with an Arrows from the Woods, taking it to Ranged 5 and killing him. He then said this was the point at which I've be able to react with I Carry Two Blades, even though my Kensai had bitten the dust.

Given the apparent triggers on the reaction, I can't see how Arrows from the Woods was legal if I Carry Two Blades wasn't.

When a ruling is given on whether I was able to use I Carry Two Blades to save Satobe, could the Rules Team guru in question go though the action & reactions step-by-step, as it seems to be a timing issue here that threatens to break my brain

Thanks,

Nick "Dysartes" Johnson

Hand of Osano-Wo Kiho Battle: Target your unbowed Monk, and bow him if he is not Tattooed: Destroy a target enemy attachment. If its Personality now has no Followers, you may make a Ranged 3 Attack targeting him.

I Carry Two Blades Reaction: After one of your Weapons is destroyed, target a non-Unique Weapon in your hand or discard pile: Attach it to your target Personality, paying 4 less Gold.

Arrows From The Woods Battle: Ranged 2 Attack. Reaction: After you target another player’s card with a Ranged Attack: Increase that Ranged Attack’s strength by 2.

You were correct. Reactions resolve when the trigger occurs, and can interrupt other actions (including other Reactions) if that trigger occurs while the other action is being taken. However, any other sort of action granted as an "additional" action will be delayed until after the current (non-Reaction) action has completely resolved and after and other effects triggered by the end of the resolution of that action.

See Additional for how Reactions don't work (I'm assuming this is what your opponent was confused by), and Timing for how they do.
