Earth Becomes Sky vs. Duty

L5R CCG Rules board, 18 February 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

A player, 18 February 2009

Hey All, If I play Duty in response to my opponent using Earth Becomes Sky on a personality with less than three chi, does the personality with the rock token:

A. Die at the end of the turn, citing: http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Duration_of_effects: "Ongoing effects last until the end of the turn in which they occur unless otherwise indicated."

B. Die immediately.

C. Not die from the rock token permanently, but still suffers the -5F penalty.

Thanks!

Earth Becomes Sky: Earth Battle: Bow this Spell: Give a target Personality opposing this unit a -5F/-2C Rock token. Cards in his unit can not perform actions for the rest of the turn.

Duty: Bushido Virtue Reaction: Before another player’s card’s effect destroys one of your Personalities, destroy one of your honorable Samurai Personalities at the same location: Negate the first Personality’s destruction.

The correct answer is "B". And that's because...

http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Specific_stats: "Th[e] destruction from zero Chi is continuously applied. Special rules apply to its negation. Ongoing and instantaneous effects that negate destruction, such as the trait "Before this card is destroyed: Negate the destruction," will not negate destruction from zero Chi (see Effects)."
