Legacy question: Toshimoko Sensei

L5R CCG Rules board, 31 December 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I was recently informed that Toshimoko Sensei no longer increases my focus values due to the fact that it states '' All cards played...'' and revealing focus cards is not playing cards. Is this true? can the legacy council do something about this, for if this is true, then it negates a lot of Crane players favorite sensei, only because of a technicallity.

All Focus cards that any of your Samurai play during duels have their Focus values increased by 1. Your Personalities will not refuse challenges.

Yeah, I see the problem... also, your Samurai don't play cards, you do.

Read the card as, "After you focus a card in a duel involving one of your Samurai Personalities: Increase the card's Focus Value by 1. Challenges issued to your Personalities will not be refused."

I find that "Errata'' is a loaded word that means different things to different people, UK (may I call you "UK"?).

The more important question I feel should be asked is, "Is there any difference between how Toshimoko Sensei has always been-ruled-to/been-intended-to work and how it would work if worded as MacBeth suggests it be read?"

I'd like to think the answer to that question is, "No."

Some Samurai Rules warp older cards' intent/original-use, I grant you. But where that occurs to the point of unusability and/or non-sensicalness (read: my comment in the original thread about Samurai playing cards), some common sense should be applied, which I attempted to do with my instruction as to how the card should be read.
