Enemy (Follow Up)

L5R CCG Rules board, 23 October 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

In regards to this old post: Enemy Ruling

The fully expanded rule on the term "enemy".

Enemy In a battle or attack, if you are the Defender or a defending ally, "enemy" describes a player who is the Attacker or an attacking ally, armies on the attacking side, and units or cards in units controlled by an attacking player. Conversely, if you are the Attacker or an attacking ally, "enemy" describes a player who is the Defender or a defending ally, armies on the defending side, and units or cards in units controlled by an defending player. In a phrase such as "an enemy card," "enemy" does not refer to cards outside of units. [ADDED April 20 2008] See Sequence of Play, Attack Phase, Battles. A Personality you somehow control in an enemy army is still “enemy” to you. If you somehow change sides in a battle (for example, through the card "False Alliance") your perspective on who is "enemy" and who is "friendly" changes immediately. For "enemy leader" see Leader.

When I quit a few years back the term enemy didn't exist so I am trying to understand it fully (since I started up again, L5R is like the crack of CCG's!). I bolded and underlined the parts of the rule I am slightly confused about. This appears to contradict the ruling (or I'm reading it wrong) so I just want to clear things up.

During a battle, units at home are or are not considered enemy units?

Also, units found at battles that are not in the process of being resolved are or are not considered enemy units?

Zen posted that the bolded statement does not apply to cards not in an army. Why not? Personalities in the Attacker's home are still "units or cards in units controlled by an attacking player." The rule of location will still prevent any battle action from targeting said unit at home (barring any exception text, of course). I haven't seen any text currently in the comprehensive rules that restricts the phrase 'an enemy card' to only refer to cards in armies.

Ah, that helps. By the time you read this, the offending post will be fixed.
