Terrains

L5R CCG Rules board, 15 October 2008 to 17 October 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

That depends on the sort of effect the terrain creates. See Duration of Effects.

Can you be more specific, please (in a new thread, of course)?

Three-stone river

Mountains of Phoenix

Blanketed Forest

Three-Stone River: Terrain Battle: Before this battle’s resolution, reduce the Force of each Personality at this battlefield to the Force of his highest-Force Follower, or to 1 if he has no Followers.

As described under Duration of Effects, when this takes effect, it creates a set of ongoing effects, one per Personality whose force is reduced; since there this is from a terrain and no duration is specified, the force reductions last until the terrain is discarded after battle resolution [FIXED].

Mountains of Phoenix: Mountain Terrain Battle: Before this battle’s resolution, the Attacker and the Defender each choose a unit in their own army; the active player decides who chooses first. Then, destroy the chosen units.

The destruction of a unit is an instantaneous effect; it has no duration.

Blanketed Forest: Winter Terrain Battle: The snow blocks travel, negating units' movement to or from this battlefield.

The negation of movement is a continuous effect; it lasts while the terrain is in play.

Regarding this topic. According to the Comprehensive Rules terrains are an exception from the general rule:

"If a Terrain leaves play, its ongoing effects end, and its delayed effects will no longer be applied. This is not negation of those effects (that is, even effects that can not be negated will be ended).

After battle resolution, discard any Terrains in play at the current battlefield. Discarding a Terrain in this way ends its ongoing effects, unless they are delayed to a point in time that has yet to occur, or their duration explicitly lasts beyond the battle resolution. This is not negation of those effects."

Therefore the effect of Three-Stone River shouldn't last until the end of the turn.

Also, here...

The ongoing force penalty effects of Three-Stone River end when the card is discarded after battle resolution.
