Determination, Assigning Blame, created Personalities

L5R CCG Rules board, 13 October 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hi there

In order to make sure my action goes through, I use Determination before destroying one of my opponent's personalities. Can he play Assigning Blame in response, or will Determination remove the personality before he has a chance to react?

Also, let's say my target was a personality created with, say, Venerable Master. Would this make a difference?

Text on cards -

Determination: Dark Virtue Reaction: Before you announce an action, target one of your Samurai: The action can not have its effects negated or have its targeting changed. After the action destroys any Personality, remove him from the game.

Assigning Blame: Political Reaction: After one of your Personalities is destroyed, if you control a Courtier: Dishonor a target Personality. His controller loses 3 Honor; this loss can be negated but not reduced.

Thanks for your time and help, Mark

Both are after destruction, so Determination's delayed effect goes before the Reaction (see http://rules.l5r.com/Timing).

No, the created card has still been destroyed (http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_D#Destroy) and the triggers are the same.

Regarding this ruling...

I agree that the personality was removed from the game before the reaction, but the personality was destroyed nevertheless, the trigger did actually occur. As Assigning Blame is a fate card, it shouldn't matter what actually happened to the personality after being destroyed (unlike in other cases like the reaction being on the personality itself, like Shosuro Takuro or Shosuro Adeiko being both destroyed and removed) ; the personality was destroyed so the player should be able to react to that trigger with all other cards he has in his hand or in play (Fatina, Shrine to Osano-Wo, Empress' Address... a list too big to be exhaustive).

I insist on this because I think it was the OP's question but I found the answer a little too vague for a ruling with so many implications on many other cards (perhaps you were saying this same thing in the first place but I wanted to be sure).

As far as I can tell, we're saying the same thing.
