Tsuruchi Takeba + Determination + Ranged Attack rule

L5R CCG Rules board, 22 September 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Tsuruchi Takeba's ability says that his Ranged Attack doesn't kill the target Personality or Follower but that goes against the rulebook right? So my question is: can I use Determination to bypass Takeba's non killing clause and make his Ranged Attack kill as every other Ranged Attack do?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, that is what the first Cardinal Rule is made for.

No. Determination would simply say that all effects of Takeba's action can not be negated. The clause "that does not destroy its target" that follows his Ranged 6 Attack is not a negation of the destruction but a phrase that modifies the Ranged Attack effect. As a consequence, Determination would affect the whole modified effect.

Effects, Order of effects: "EXCEPTION 1: Phrases modifying effects may come after the effect's text, but are applied at the same time as the effect. Such phrases will directly refer to the effect, increasing or reducing its restrictions or scope. Modifying phrases refer to the immediately previous effect text, unless they explicitly refer to another effect or to multiple effects."
