Bayushi Hisako vs Ring of Fire

L5R CCG Rules board, 10 June 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Suppose Bayushi Hisako is opposing a lone enemy personality. If the enemy player uses ring of fire (or hitsu-do, greater sacrifice, etc) to destroy Hisako, destroying the lone opposing personality as a cost, can Hisako legally target and dishonor that destroyed personality?

No. When playing actions, costs are paid before effects are activated (see Using abilities). Ring of Fire, Hitsu-do and Greater Sacrifice have a cost of destroying their performing Personality, so she is already dead when Hisako is destroyed by their effect and Hisako's Reaction can not target a Personality who is not in play per Implications of in and out of play: "Cards that are not in play or in a resolution, entering-play or focusing area [...] cannot be targeted".
