Gunso (also Shosuro) Hirobumi & Vengeful Shadows

L5R CCG Rules board, 24 May 2008 to 25 May 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Vengeful Shadows:

Text Ninja Battle: Bow one of your target Ninja Personalities: Lose 2 Honor. Give a target Personality opposing your Ninja two -1F/-1C Poison tokens. You may move your Ninja home.

Gunso Hirobumi:

Can only attach to a Scorpion Clan Personality. Reaction: After this Personality bows to pay a cost of a non-Political action: Straighten him.

If Bayushi Ninja is the target of Vengeful Shadows and has Gunso Hirobumi attached, would he straighten immediately after "Bow one of your target Ninja Personalities" and before "Lose two honor"? Or, would Bayushi Ninja straighten after "You may move your Ninja home"? After reading the rules section on timing, http://rules.l5r.com/Timing, it seems the reaction would take place before the action finishes resolving and before the action's effects would take place. I this a correct interpretation of the rules? Thx

Yes, you are correct.

It helps to look at the Reaction in bits: "After this Pesonalitiy bows..." is when it happens. "...to pay the cost of a non-Political action" is just a restriction on the type of bowing to which the Follower can react.
