bayushi saya and duty

L5R CCG Rules board, 12 April 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hi, I have Hida A (with a personal honor of 2) and Hida B on the table. My opponent targets Hida A with Bayushi Saya's ability, and then play Hired Killer on Hida B. I want to save Hida B by playing Duty on Hida A. What happens?

1- I cannot because Hida A won't be honorable so that he cannot be used for duty. 2- I can play Duty on Hida A but then I lose 2 honor because of Saya and he's dishonored in the discard pile. 3- Same as solution #2 but I also lose 2 more honor because Hida A dies dishonored. 4- I can play Duty and lose no honor because Hida A is dead before being dishonored. 5- Something else?

Bayushi Saya: Political Open: Target a Personality. After the next time this turn his controller assigns him or an action resolves that he performed, his controller loses Honor equal to his Personal Honor, then he is dishonored.

Duty: Bushido Virtue Reaction: Before another player’s card’s effect destroys one of your Personalities, destroy one of your honorable Samurai Personalities at the same location: Negate the first Personality’s destruction.

Thanks for your time.

2. You can play Duty on Hida A but he is performing it, so after it resolves you lose 2 honor and Hida A becomes dishonorable in the discard pile. (Fixed)

Regarding this here http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=67087

"2. You can play Duty on Hida A but he is performing it, so after it resolves you lose 2 honor and Hida A becomes dishonorable in the discard pile. (Fixed)"

From http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_P-Q#Perform Perform A Personality or Follower is performing an action if its controller is the player taking the action, and any of these things is true: * The action comes from an ability on the Personality or Follower. * The action comes from an ability on an Item or Spell in the Personality’s unit. * The Personality or Follower was targeted by targeting in the ability’s constraints block (between the two colons). Costs or other restrictions that are added to an action, and involve targeting a Personality, do not mean that the Personality thus targeted is performing the action. The targeting must come from the base wording of the ability.

How is Hida A performing Duty? Duty doesn't Target anything.

How is Hida A performing Duty? Duty doesn't Target anything.

The original poster misquoted Duty's text.

Note my esteemed colleague's link to Duty's MRP listing in the CR; it indeed targets.
