Naval+Unshakable+Otemi

L5R CCG Rules board, 14 March 2008 to 15 March 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Ikoma Otemi XP3 is naval and tactitian. Unshakable reads Tactical Battle: Target an Action card in your discard pile. Play it for one of its Battle abilities as an additional action. Remove this card and the target card from the game, even if out of play, after that action ends. (Observe restrictions on the ability's number of uses, such as the default "once per turn.")

can otemi perform Unshakable as the naval action ? since the tactical battle need target and spent the tactical action that a tactitian has ?

can otemi perform Unshakable as the naval action ?

No, because Otemi does not perform Unshakable. No one performs it. Note that none of the below apply:

http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_P-Q, Peform: "A Personality or Follower is performing an action if its controller is the player taking the action, and any of these things is true:

The action comes from an ability on the Personality or Follower. The action comes from an ability on an Item or Spell in the Personality’s unit. The Personality or Follower was targeted by targeting in the ability’s constraints block (between the two colons)."

since the tactical battle need target and spent the tactical action that a tactitian has ?

This incorrect belief is the source of your error. Unshakable is a Tactical action not performed by a Tactician, as described here (emphasis mine):

http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_T, Tactical: "An action with the Tactical keyword can only be performed by a Tactician Personality (see Perform). A Tactical action that is not performed by any card can only be taken if one of your unbowed Tacticians is at the current battlefield. Each Tactician can only perform one Tactical action per turn."

Since I read the answer of the topic below and the faq, viewtopic.php?f=59&t=66450

I figured out if i can use other tactical actions like bonus from discarding a card since the personality who "targeted" to use Unshakable perform no action. The use of the tactical action only is applied if the card text reads "TARGET" ?

Thanks again.

Yes. Unshakable requires you to control an unbowed Tactician at the current battlefield but this Tactician is not performing Unshakable, therefore it doesn't prevent him from performing a Tactical action later if he hasn't already performed one earlier this turn. Moreover he isn't targeted by Unshakable, which one target is "an Action card in your discard pile". See Glossary, Target :

The word “target” must appear as a verb or an adjective for the procedure to be considered targeting -- just “choosing” something is not targeting.

The use of the tactical action only is applied if the card text reads "TARGET" ?

No, a Tactician may be performing a Tactical action without being targeted by it (see Glossary, Perform).

A Personality or Follower is performing an action if its controller is the player taking the action, and any of these things is true: * The action comes from an ability on the Personality or Follower. * The action comes from an ability on an Item or Spell in the Personality’s unit. * The Personality or Follower was targeted by targeting in the ability’s constraints block (between the two colons).

For instance, Akodo Katsumoto always performs his own action even if another Tactician is targeted and bowed as a cost, because the action comes from an ability on himself.

Tactical Battle: Bow one of your target Personalities: Bow a target enemy Personality with Personal Honor equal to or less than the Personal Honor of the Personality you bowed.
