Terrains - Enemy Cards?

L5R CCG Rules board, 31 January 2008 to 1 February 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Is a terrain played by my opponent in battle considered to be an "enemy card?"

For instance, if I had an action that said "Battle: Destroy a target enemy card," could I use it to destroy a terrain my opponent had played at that battle?

No.

Must be a player or in a unit to be enemy.

I don't understand how a card controlled by an "enemy" is not an "enemy card"

The comprehensive rules state:

Code: Select all Enemy

In a battle or attack, if you are the Defender or a defending ally, "enemy" describes with a player who is the Attacker or an attacking ally, and units or armies on the attacking side; if you are the Attacker or an attacking ally, "enemy" describes a player who is the Defender or a defending ally, and units or armies on the defending side. See Sequence of Play, Attack Phase, Battles.

Therefore, if I am the attacker then an enemy card would be a card of the player who is the defender or a defending ally. Furthermore, if I am the defender, an enemy card would be a card of the player who is the attacker or an attacking ally.

Or more simply put, a card controlled by the defender or defending ally if I am attacking or a card controlled by the attacker or attacking ally if I am defending.

Finally since terrains are controlled by the player who played them and they must be played during battle, they must be controlled by a defender, defending ally, attacker, or attacking ally and would therefore be an enemy card to the opposite side.

If there is a flaw in my logic please explain it to me because I cannot understand how a card controlled by the "enemy" is not considered an "enemy card"

By definition. The definition refers to players and units. It does not refer to terrains, regions, other miscellaneous cards attached to Provinces, Formations, Events in play, etc.
