Bayushi Tomo and Negated chi

L5R CCG Rules board, 11 January 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

If Bayushi Tomo uses her battle action, but a card attached to her negates the -2 chi, can she still use the action? The main question here is, if a cost is negated after it technically pays for the action, can the action still take place?

You have to be more specific about the card doing the negating, I'm afraid.

(I)f a cost is negated after it technically pays for the action, can the action still take place?

Again, more details are needed about what "technically" after means. The "technically" in there makes me suspect the answer will be, "No."

Okay, the item in question is Resilient Naginata, and I know that this card is not up for questions yet, that is why my wording is a little...well...wordy.

But, the question remains, the item states in its trait '' Negate all Chi penalties on this personality.'' Bayushi Tomo's battle action gives her a -1c. Since this item is not setting her chi to a minimum, some speculate that she could indefinitely take her action during battle. I, on the other hand, believe that the negating part stops the process since the payment is not made. If you are unwilling to answer this due to the fact of the card not being out yet, please put it on hold and answer it when the time comes. Thank you.

If a cost involves a change to a stat, the explicit value of the stat must change by the full stated amount or the cost can not be paid. Minimum or maximum values can interfere with the payment of such costs.

Citation: Cost Alterations

If any specific payment of a cost is negated, delayed, or made impossible in the process of paying costs, the player paying the costs may use alternate available sources to pay that cost, or may choose not to pay the cost.

It doesn't just have to be a minimum value stopping the Chi Loss. Negating the loss will prevent you from successfully paying the cost just as well.
