Houhou + Wardens

L5R CCG Rules board, 19 December 2007 to 7 January 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Am I correct in assuming I cannot use the Wardens' Reaction to attach to Houhou if I bring into play using her Limited ability?

That looks right.

Sorry to follow up on a question that already got an answer, but, regarding this question:

Since we can't gain honor for bringing a personality into play outside of dynasty, isn't it unavoidable that we have a trigger for Warden's reaction? After all, it's Houhou's action that's giving the honor (in a later stage of the action, at that), and not Houhou entering play. Thanks for handling the question again (and sorry)!

Wardens Reaction: If this card is in your hand, after you bring a Personality into play without gaining Honor: Attach this card to him (paying all costs). Gain 2 Honor.

Houhou Limited: If Houhou is honorably dead: She rises from the ashes. Bring her into play, paying 4 less Gold. --[Wardens would attach right here.]-- Gain 3 Honor.

Wardens says nothing about the source of the honor gain, and there is no rule saying "bringing a Personality into play without Honor" only refers to the Dynasty phase. Ruling stands for the moment.

Regarding this thread just one last time:

I recognize that there's no ruling that the phrase "bringing a Personality into play without Honor" only refers to the Dynasty phase, but my point was that, to my knowledge, the only point in the game where gaining honor is necessarily coincident with a personality coming into play is during dynasty phase. Why is this important? Because if you separate, chronologically, the honor gain from the personality entering play, it is possible for Wardens to have a legal trigger for its reaction if no honor gain had occurred by the time the personality enters play. I know a little more about entering play honor gains than I did when I first asked for clarificaion (see below), but that hasn't substantially changed this situation. At this point, it's probably useful to check Warden's action again:

-------------------------------------------------------------- Wardens Reaction: If this card is in your hand, after you bring a Personality into play without gaining Honor: Attach this card to him (paying all costs). Gain 2 Honor. --------------------------------------------------------------

So, at any point in time when I have brought a personality into play without gaining honor, I am permitted to play this action. Now the remining question is, by the point in time when Houhou entered play, had I gained any honor?

-------------------------------------------------------------- Houhou Limited: If Houhou is honorably dead: She rises from the ashes. Bring her into play, paying 4 less Gold. --[Wardens would attach right here.]-- Gain 3 Honor. --------------------------------------------------------------

Nope, it appears that no honor was gained by the time Houhou entered play. The point in time where Wardens has its legal trigger is highlighted above.

For completion's sake, I went ahead and dug up the pertinent rules about gaining honor when personalities enter play and Reaction triggers.

-------------------------------------------------------------- "Reactions give a point in time, or trigger, when they can be taken."

"If you haven’t gained Honor this way during this Dynasty Phase, and aren’t choosing to pay the 2 less Gold, you may choose to gain Honor equal to your aligned Personality’s Personal Honor just before you bring him into play." --------------------------------------------------------------

The only rules about Reaction timing indicate that a Reaction is triggered the moment its conditions are met, so there's no need to wait until the end of Houhou's action resolution to play the Reaction. Given the way that we gain honor during Dynasty phase (honor just prior to personality), you might have been able to argue that Wardens doesn't have a legal trigger if Houhou's honor gain had happened -before- Houhou entered play. That, however, hasn't happened. There is clearly a legal trigger for Warden's Reaction at the indicated point in time in Houhou's action.

I understand the argument. The ruling will stand for now, however. We'll let you know if / when that changes.
