Constraints Block VS Gold Cost payment resolution order

L5R CCG Rules board, 10 December 2007 to 2 January 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Is the Gold Cost of an Action Card paid first, or the costs presented in the Constraints Block?

Example Situation: My Stronghold is Kyuden Asako. I play Unexpected Intimidation, bowing Isawa Umeko, and bowing a Temple of the Seekers to overpay for the Unexpected Intimidation's gold cost. At the point I bow my Temple to pay for the Unexpected Intimidation's gold cost, is Isawa Umeko already bowed for the Constraints Block's cost, or will she be bowed at a later point?

The reason the confusion arises for me, instead of simply being able to assume it's Left-right, top-down reading and thus Gold Cost must be paid first, is due to the various actions where the gold cost is determined by text in the constraints block, implying that the constraints block is checked first.

Pertinent Text Kyuden Asako: "Reaction: After one of your Temples bows: Straighten one of your target Shugenja or Monks." Isawa Umeko: "Shugenja" Temple of the Seekers: "Temple. Bow to produce 2 gold." Unexpected Intimidation: "Battle: Bow one of your target Personalities: Move a target enemy Personality home. If this movement is negated, bow him. If this bowing is negated, destroy him. If this destruction is negated, remove him from the game." 0 Gold Cost.

Is the Gold Cost of an Action Card paid first, or the costs presented in the Constraints Block?

Just got this one added into the wiki. http://rules.l5r.com/Costs_and_restrict ... g_of_costs: "Gold costs indicated by a Fate card's gold coin icon are paid before any costs indicated by the card's text."
