Soul Jar's delayed effect

L5R CCG Rules board, 26 November 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I have some confusion over the rules in regards to this ruling: http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=63594

From the comprehensive rules: "A delayed effect is activated at one time, but is actually applied at another. Such delayed effects are still said to “resolve” when they are first activated, but are actually applied at a future time." and "Effects that were activated regarding a card in play, and then delayed, also apply to the card at the delayed point in time, even if it is no longer in play."

Soul Jar Limited: Bow this personality: Lose 3 Honor. Target one of your dead Personalities. He enters play, waiving costs, with a +2F/-1C token and permanently has 0 PH. After the next time this game this Personality straightens or leaves play, destroy the target.

Now as I see it, when Soul Jar is used, the delayed effect is activated and refers to the Personality the item is attached to. The destruction of the target is now a delayed effect which occurs on the condition of the already referenced Personality straightening. It shouldn't matter that the item has moved/been destroyed. Given the ruling linked above contradicts this, what have I gotten wrong?

(W)hat have I gotten wrong?

You're assuming that "this Personality" is a phrase that is referring to the rest of the card text. It doesn't. It's a phrase that is referring to a rules definition.

http://rules.l5r.com/Special_wording_ru ... _to_things: "Attachments that refer to 'this Personality' refer to the personality it is attached to." Attached to right now.
