Aka Name+Shosuro Kyuichi

L5R CCG Rules board, 23 November 2007 to 24 November 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Relevant Text: Aka Name: Battle: Give a target Human Personality opposing Aka-name a -1F/-1C Poison token. Give each Shadowlands Human Personality in the target's army an additional -1F/-1C Poison token.

Shosuro Kyuichi Reaction: After an action resolves that gave a Personality a Chi penalty (including penalties from tokens): Give the Personality a -1F/-1C Poison token.

The Scenario: I'm going against a Spider deck. I attack with Aka Name and two Kyuichi. I sneak, and use Aka Name to give each shadowlands personality(In this case, the 4 defending) a -1F/-1C Token. I react with Kyuichi. Which of the following occur:

1) Since Kyuichi's ability effects the target of another action, he gives a poison token to each of the 4 Shadowlands personalities Aka Name Effected 2) Kyuichi's ability only effects the person Aka Name targetted 3) Kyuichi's ability effects any single target that Aka Name's effect happened to hit.

I'd think that it would be 1 since it doesn't specify a number of maximum targets. The effect hits everyone, so when Kyuichi reacts his reaction would slap everyone aka name hit. So what's the right answer?

Everything on Shosuro Kyuichi is written in the singular, so he can give a token to one Personality only, although it can be any Personality receiving a token, not just the one inititially targeted.
