Destruction of unit vs saving personality

L5R CCG Rules board, 11 November 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

In qestoins about subject (here) default answer is 'saving a personality does not save rest of his unit'. Question - why ?

SE Rulebook : A Personality and all his or her attached cards make up a unit. If a Personality leaves play (for example, by being destroyed), all cards in the unit leave play in the same way. When a unit is targeted, this targets its Personality, not any other cards in the unit.

Ruthless Advance : Destroy target defending unit. The Seventh Tower : Destroy a target unit opposing him with less total Force than your Personalities Force. Consumed by Five Fires : Destroy a target unit in the enemy army with fewer cards than this unit.

IIRC, clausule 'target unit = target each card in unit' was active somewhere in previous editions, but I cannot remember any current applications / variations of it...

[EDIT : card texts]

The rulebook section you quoted (not sure from where) refers to targeting, not effects. Destruction is an effect.

http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_U#Unit: "Effects on a unit are applied to the Personality and all cards in the unit at the same time."

Also note that the wiki takes precedence over the rulebook.
